6 Tips for a Fire-Safe 4th of July

Conditions are perfect for celebrating this Fourth of July: It's sunny, warm, dry, and a great way to start a three-day weekend. But did you know these conditions are also ideal for wildfire? 

Did you also know that 90% of wildfires in the US are started by humans

Here are six tips you can use to help keep fire-safe this season

1. Check the local rules and regulations regarding fireworks

And follow them! Make sure you are using fireworks that have been State Fire Marshal approved, read the directions, and only use them outdoors away from grass or flammable materials. Read more

2. Going camping? Know if you need a campfire permit

Even if you don't plan on having a campfire, permits are required for any open fires, including campfires, barbecues and portable stoves on federally controlled lands. Burn bans have been issued for 31 million acres of Cal Fire State Responsibility area across California, so be sure to check if burning is allowed before you go.  Read more 

3. Review your grilling fire safety

Know how and where to operate a grill safely! Use your grill only outside (not on a patio or terrace) clean your grill grate after each use, safely remove the coals when they've cooled, light your gas grill while it's open, and never leave it unattended. Read more

 4. Keep a fire extinguisher at the ready (and learn how to use it!)

Most people own a fire extinguisher, but do you know how to use it? Remember to P.A.S.S. - Pull the pin, Aim low, Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, and Sweep from side-to-side. Read more

5. Make sure your home is fire safe
